Web Project
WebQuest Summary: Saving Our Environment – Reducing
Plastic Waste
Objectives
This one-week WebQuest is designed for Grade 10–11
intermediate EFL learners to develop English language proficiency through
inquiry-based learning. Students investigate the issue of plastic pollution,
conduct research using online and offline resources, and propose practical
solutions for reducing plastic waste in their school and community. The project
aims to improve students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills
while fostering critical thinking, digital literacy, collaboration, creativity,
and problem-solving abilities.
Process
Students work collaboratively in groups of three to
explore the causes and effects of plastic pollution. They gather information
from authentic sources such as articles, videos, reports, and classroom
discussions. After evaluating and analyzing the information collected, students
discuss possible solutions and create an environmental awareness campaign. The
project concludes with group presentations in which students share their
findings and recommendations using English as the primary language of communication.
Evaluation
Student performance is assessed through an authentic
assessment rubric focusing on five key areas: research quality, language use,
critical thinking, creativity, and presentation skills. Each criterion is
scored on a four-point scale for a total of 20 marks. In addition, peer
evaluation may be used to assess participation, cooperation, and responsibility
within each group, encouraging reflection and accountability throughout the
learning process.
Advantages
This WebQuest promotes meaningful language learning by
connecting English with a real-world environmental issue. It encourages active
participation, collaborative learning, and authentic communication. Students
develop higher-order thinking skills by analyzing information, evaluating
sources, and proposing solutions. The project also enhances digital literacy,
environmental awareness, and learner motivation through engaging and relevant
tasks.
Conclusion
Saving Our Environment: Reducing Plastic Waste
demonstrates how WebQuest-based learning can effectively integrate language
development with inquiry and problem-solving. Through research, collaboration,
and authentic communication, students strengthen their English proficiency
while becoming more informed and responsible global citizens. The project
provides a meaningful learning experience that supports both linguistic and
cognitive growth in a technology-enhanced learning environment.
